My Yellow Chair, Part 3: Marriage Encounter, Salvation, and New Friends

We continued at St. Martins, working in the church, and helping in the nursery and on the grounds. Dave was asked to be on the Board. Melissa was confirmed there, and Kim was healed from a nagging sickness. We were now tithing and learning the ways of a Christian family.

There was talk of Marriage Encounter, so we signed up to attend.  When we arrived at the meeting the priest was the moderator, and several team couples shared their breakthroughs in marriage.  There was an emphasis on communication.  We were to write for 10 minutes on a subject, and we selected like “How do I feel when you don’t tell me you won’t be home for dinner.”  Then at the end of the day we exchanged notes and then discussed them for 10 minutes.  It was called ‘10 and 10.’

That weekend when Dave and I exchanged our notes, I was very touched when I read his note. “I know now that God loves me.” This was a great breakthrough and I told him what happened to me that day in the kitchen and he really listened. We went back to church and shared our experience and they led Dave in the prayer of salvation. Joy filled our hearts; we had purpose now.

Our lives changed so dramatically. Some people said, “Oh, we were like that too, but we settled down and you will too.” But we said, “Oh no we won’t” –and we never did. Through the Marriage Encounter, we made lifelong friends.
